Recreation News D2Y (District 2 Youth Action Team) is excited to be hosting the 4th Annual Community Winter Fest happening this February at the Gordon R Snow Community Centre. For those who have never attended, this event will have something for everyone. From snowshoe races to hot chocolate, from spider dogs to winter crafts, there will be a variety of indoor and outdoor games that will entice the whole family to be active this winter. The event will be part of the Take the Roof Off Winter provincial initiative through Nova Scotia Health Promotion and Protection. The red toques of our youth volunteers will be hard to miss, as D2Y members work diligently throughout the afternoon doing such things as cooking banana boats over the outdoor fire, leading parachute games inside and taking turns leading the treasure hunt. Be watching closely for our ‘red' flyers which will be distributed soon with all the event details. Winter programs are well underway and it is good to see so many people getting involved. The open gym for children and youth continues to grow in popularity. Each week more and more young people are taking advantage of this free time to play the sport of their choice. New this winter is the free Youth Games Night on Thursdays from 7-8:30 p.m. Youth between the ages of 13-16 are welcome to come to our youth room and play a variety of video games such as Rock Bank and Guitar Hero, as well as board games, Twister, pool, air hockey, and ping pong. A number of other games will be available to keep you moving and having fun with your friends. Girls Soar Activity Week is Feb. 19-26. This is an initiative dedicated to increasing opportunities for girls and young women to be active. We will be celebrating Girls Soar Week with our annual Girls Soar Sizzling Social to be held at the Gordon R. Snow Community Centre. This event will be an opportunity for girls in the community to try their hand at something new, be active and have fun with their friends. More information will be sent home through the schools with the girls closer to the event. If you have any questions about our programs or services please call the Gordon R. Snow Community Centre at 860-4570.
