WINDSOR JUNCTION: A 60-year-old woman was killed following an afternoon collision between a vehicle and a VIA Rail passenger train Jan. 27.
Julie Vials, of Windsor Junction, was the lone occupant of a blue Hyundai Accent that collided with the Montreal-bound train at the intersection of Watson Lane, a private road, and Windsor Junction Road, in Windsor Junction, at 1:10 p.m.
Firefighters from Waverley (HRM Station 41) and Lakeview-Windsor Junction-Fall River (HRM Station 45) were sent rushing to the scene. Halifax District RCMP were at the scene investigating the incident.
The deceased was transported to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, in Halifax, by EHS. She succumbed to her injuries at 4:48 p.m., Const. Tamu Bracken, acting media relations for Halifax District RCMP, said in a release issued at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 27.
The Accent lay on its roof with sneakers and other items strewn about 10 metres from the intersection. The backseat of the blue Hyundai Accent was pushed to where the trunk was located.
At one point, two officers were reportedly attempting to remove the front end of the vehicle from underneath the train.
The train, with 46 passengers on board, was bound for Montreal.
Const. Bracken provided an update early on in on their investigation at 3:35 p.m., Jan. 27.
"RCMP traffic analysts are on the scene and we'll wait for that report before we release anything else," Const. Bracken told the Laker.
She confirmed there are no traffic warning lights at the crossing where the incident occurred, but there are stop signs on both sides of the crossing.
She added RCMP had never issued any notification regarding the woman's condition except for the fact that she had life-threatening injuries, until the later press release indicating the woman had died.
Windsor Junction Road, which was closed to traffic since the collision occurred, re-opened shortly after 5 p.m.
According to Bonnie Ryan, Vials was a member of the Cobequid Community Health Board until this year, led the seniors section of the Fall River and Area Crime Prevention Association and taught countless hours of First Aid for many community groups.
