Robbery victim turns incident around on suspect
Pat Healey

LOWER SACKVILLE: A robbery suspect was captured at the Scotiabank ATM, on Sackville Drive, in Lower Sackville, thanks to the quick thinking of the victim early in the morning of Jan. 11.
A man was walking to the ATM to make a deposit around 1 a.m., when an apparent intoxicated male approached him.
In a media release, Cpl. Joe Taplin, spokesman for Halifax District RCMP, said the male suspect asked the victim for a smoke, which the victim stated he didn’t have.
“The suspect then put the victim in a head lock, let him go and gave him a hug, apologizing and saying he was only fooling around,” Cpl. Taplin said.
At that point, the victim entered the ATM, where he was followed by the suspect who grabbed the victim’s wallet, kicked him, pushed him and began pushing the ATM keys to get money out.
“The victim then got away from the suspect in the ATM area, went outside where he held the door closed and waved to his son, who was across the street to come over,” Cpl. Taplin added. “The victim’s son drove their vehicle over to the bank and pulled in front of the doors to keep them closed until RCMP arrived.”
A few minutes later, police officers arrived, finding the 24-year-old male suspect inside the bank waiting to be released.
“The victim moved his vehicle away from the doors and RCMP arrested the suspect for robbery,” Cpl. Taplin said.
The man was released a short time later to appear in Nova Scotia Provincial Court at a later date.
