Legion vandalized with broken windows

WAVERLEY: Jim Macleod received a phone call he didn’t want to get early in the morning of May 22. MacLeod was just having breakfast when the cleaner at the Waverley branch of the Royal Canadian Legion phoned him at 7:10 a.m. to tell him some bad news. He arrived at the Legion, located along Rocky Lake Drive, to discover a mess inside the building. The cause of the mess was four windows which had been broken sometime overnight. The president of the Legion called Lower Sackville RCMP immediately to inform them of the discovery. Two blinds were also damaged. While three of the windows were badly damaged by smaller rocks, it was the window near the rear of the building by the fire lane sign which suffered the most serious damage. It was smashed out by what MacLeod estimated was a 13-14 inch wide, 40-pound cement rock. He said the damage will cost the Legion about $1,000. The windows are boarded up and will be until the replacement ones arrive in seven to 10 days. “It’s just stupid,” MacLeod said. “It’s a lack of discipline. It makes you wonder.” MacLeod has the names of a youth boy and girl who are suspected of causing the damage. He said the Legion is hopeful of proceeding with charges, pending the completion of the police investigation. “If I did that when I was a kid I wouldn’t have been able to sit for a good month,” he added. An official with Lower Sackville RCMP said they’re continuing their investigation into the matter. phealey@enfieldweeklypress.com
